Diablo 4 Item Upgrades

Upgrade components can be put into armor, weapons and trinkets. They can also be connected to gathering tools. However, the majority of upgrade components cannot be replaced or salvaged except by using an Upgrade Extractor. Glyphs are the exception, which can be salvaged with the Black Lion Salvage Kit or Ascended Salvage Tool.
Upgrades to an item can cost gold or Dilithium depending on the type of item. Additionally, many upgrades require Flightstones and/or crests. The number of crests and Flightstones needed to upgrade an item varies on the level of the gear, and a maximum upgrade level is established by Blizzard. Upgrades to the highest level are expensive, especially when it comes to upgrading PvE gear.
Upgrades can also alter a weapon's ammunition or damage die size. They also can alter its special weapon properties like its bulky or operative property, or hand requirement. Some upgrades can change the appearance of weapons.
While increasing stats is the primary purpose of upgrading items however, you must consider the cost of upgrading an item before making an investment. Spend your gold on rare items, and not on items of the common or magical tier. These items aren't worth upgrading, and rare items will soon outclass them.
Ask your guild members for their opinions in case you aren't sure if upgrading is worth the cost. You may be able find cheaper upgrades at a lower cost.
